Project 52 - Week 35

Week 35 ~ August 28- September 3

The boys and I decided to go and make a second attempt at seeing the Bore Tide.  (Well, I decided and the boys had no choice but to come along)  A bore tide is a wave that forms at the front of a tide as it come into a small space.  Alaska has the only bore tide in the U.S.  The wave is bigger on days when the tide is particularly low (around full and new moons) and there are charts to tell you when good days to see it are going to come around.  Search for bore tide on youtube and you can see people surfing it!
The tide can be seen from several spots along the Seward Highway.  We stopped at three turnouts on our drive (two looking for the bore tide and one just for fun)

At our first stop we got to check out an old train.  The big circle on the front is a giant snow plow!

Our second stop was at Beluga point.  Looking away from the water here we spotted 3 Dahl Sheep/Mountain Goats!  We got to see them through a telescope near the road, but they were still too small/fuzzy to determine which of the two animals they really were.  You can't tell but they are in this picture.  They are tiny white specs near what looks like a mound of dirt.

While I was lamenting the fact that I couldn't zoom in far enough to take a picture where the goats were visible, William had the genius idea to take a picture through the telescope!  So glad he brought his camera along because his was just small enough to fit inside the eye piece of the telescope.

These are the mud flats at our next stop, Beluga Point.  We waited here until about 30 minutes after the tide was supposed to come through.  The tide was obviously coming in when we left, so we thought maybe there wasn't a good wave this day.  The boys had fun running around and climbing rocks while were were here.

This is the view from our next stop, Bird Point.

We waited until 45 minutes after the wave was supposed to roll through here and it finally came!  It is the squiggly white line in the middle of this picture.  I wish we could have seen it at Beluga point because we were much closer to the water there.

10 on the 10th!

1. It's Monday! I love Mondays and I hate Mondays all at the same time. I love getting back into the routine of the week, but I hate cleaning up the mess that always develops over the weekend!

2. I get a lot of questions about Alaska. Most people want to know about the sunlight. Yes, there is very little sunlight this time of year! To give you an idea of what this is like, today the sun rose at 10:05am and will set at 4:10pm. But hey, that is 3.5 more minutes of sun than yesterday!

3. We desperately need lamps in our master bedroom! I looked at JC Penney's for some, but was unwilling to pay $40 for just a lampshade!

4. I may be a tad biased, but I think I have the cutest kids in the world! Case in point, William blows me kisses when he gets out of the car to go to school every morning and waves hi to me from the school door every afternoon.

5. Alaska has some pretty amazing pink and purple sunsets!

6. I bought the cutest little dryerase board calendar at Target yesterday. I'm determined to be organized this year!

7. I totally need snowpants!

8. William is taking after me in the love of photography department. He got a Nikon Coolpix camera for Christmas (Thanks Grammy!) and is constantly taking pictures with it! Don't be surprised to see some of his shots on the blog in the future.

9. I am drooling over these Merrell Yarra's I do wear snow boots everyday, so it should be a justified purchase right?

10. Baby laughter is the sweetest sound in the world. Especially when his brothers are the ones making him laugh. :)
